Technology in the Classroom

Students of Spanish one had the opportunity to experience the new tablets available at DHS.  In this activity, students were expected to choose three famous Guatemalans from a list of nine.  Then, they used the tablets to research and complete a questionnaire about the individual people.  Think the activity was engaging?  Take a look at the photos and see for yourself...

Ellis Island Pics!

Hey everyone!

I'm finally getting around to showing off the pics from the Ellis Island simulation Mr. Jefferson and myself embarked upon.  The students were to come to me for a medical examination in which I was only supposed to speak to them in Spanish (akin to a reverse Ellis Island situation).  It was very entertaining!  Gladly, a few of my Spanish students were able to understand me at times.

Anyway, here are the pics!

Ellis Island Adventure!

This may not be exactly A&H related but, I wanted to share!  Later today, I will be assisting Mr. Jefferson in his Ellis Island recreation.  I will serve as a "customs officer" for the activity and speak to the students in Spanish while they attempt to get into the country, akin to what immigrants from other nations would have experienced upon trying to enter the United States.

I will update this post with pictures later today.

Oh, and HAPPY FRIDAY!

Latin Grammy Update!

Congratulations to Marc Anthony, winner of Recording of the Year at the 2013 Latin Grammys!  Below, I have attached the official music video for "Vivir Mi Vida", the song that snagged the award.

The voting the Spanish classes went differently, awarding Carlos Vives and his song "Volvi a Nacer" the award.  Students across all classes had a good time exploring Hispanic culture and music.  In fact, many students reported to having watched the Latin Grammys on television, despite the entire broadcast being in Spanish!  The Latin Grammy exploration was a huge success for all DHS students involved; it increased awareness of cultural differences as well as introduced the students to different types of music.

Below is a picture taken from my Spanish classroom.  The students of my 2nd bell Spanish 2 class made pictures that applied to each nominee of the Latin Grammys then, turned the corkboard in the back of the classroom into a display for the Latin Grammys.

14th Annual Latin Grammy Awards at DHS!

In honor of the 14th annual Latin Grammys taking place on November 21st, all Spanish classes at Dayton High School will be exploring the nominees for the prestigious award of "Recording of the Year".  In the next few weeks, all classes will explore the songs, artists, and culture of each and every song that was nominated for "Recording of the Year" and after listening to the songs, the students of Spanish at DHS will vote on his or her favorite, deciding who we think should be the Latin Grammy Recording of the Year!

Feel free to check out the website LatinGRAMMY.com - English and explore the nominees yourself!
